The Examinacion of Shane Brady taken this 29th day of Julij 1654
The said Shane aged thirty five yeares or thereabouts being duly sworne and Examined saieth That about Christmas next after the Rebellion hee being into the parish of Lewye in the County of Cavan at a Meeting of the Counteye then did see there Cochonaught o Gowen late Prisoner in Trim that then lately came from the slaughter of the English as they were goeinge to Drogheda as the Cochonnaught then saied hee being [the] Sergeant to Capt Hugh o Rely and the said Cochonnaght plucking out some meate forth of his knapsacke drew a long Skeane and in the presence <of> a great Company then present there, did cutt his meate therewith and being questioned by some why hee did cutt meat with soe long a skeane saied That hee had killed and an English Calliegh with that kenne as shee was following the English that were going to Drogheda, and saieth that the said Cochonnaght [ ] saied the same to many others in the Counteye as they often told this deponent And further saieth not.
