M The examjnacion of Melaghlyn ô ffenagan of Cookestowne neere ke Kells in the County of Meath aged thirty two yeares or thereaboutes taken the xxxjth day of August 1654 before vs Sir Gerrard Lowther knight James Donellan and Thomas Dongan Esquires Commissioners of the Court of Administracion of Justice and Justices of the Peace for the County and Citty of Dublin &c.
<A> who beeing duely sworne and examjned deposeth and saith That about three monthes after the rebellion the examjnant beeing in a house called the Blacke bull within fowre miles of the Towne of Cauan, in Company with Hugh ô Rely since deceased, Coconoght ô Gowen now or late prisoner in Trym, and seuerall other persons whose names the examjnant remembreth not, the examjnant did there see a skeane which belonged to the said Coconoght ô Gowen in some of the said persons hands whoe were lookeing vppon a nicke which was in the said skeane, which nick they said was made by a blow which the said Coconoght ô Gowen had giuen an Englishwoman in the head whom hee killed a little before neere Drogheda, which skeane the examjnant did afterwards see the said Coconoght ô Gowen weare and carry about him, hee saith that hee heard the said Hugh ô Rely and other persons aforesaid then say that the said Coconoght ô Gowen had killed the said Englishwoman and the said Coconoght did not then gainesay or deny the same, The examjnant further saith that Hugh ô ffarraly of Maretowne in the said County of Meath about the last harvest told the

examjnant that the said Coconoght ô Gowen did confesse to him the said Hugh ô ffarrally that hee had killed an Englishwoman neere Drogheda and about May last past Tirlagh <B> mc Carran of Cookestowne aforesaid (in the presence of Knogher Magwyre, Hugh mc Illcomey Patricke mc Illcomey, Phelipp mc Grawney & Cahell ô Gowen all of Cookestowne aforesaid did tell the examjnant that the said Coconoght ô Gowen did Confesse to him the said Tirlagh mc Carran that hee the said ( [ ] Coconoght had the winter next after the rebellion killed an Englishwoman at neere Drogheda aforesaid, And further saith not,
