The Examination of James Gourdan taken before mee the 3d of May 1653
Who being duly sworne & examined sayth that about Christmas next after the Rebellion this Examinante liueing in the towne of Bangar in the Claneboye: his mother told him that there were some of the towne two or three tymes looking for him this Examinante to speake with him and that she heard it was to goe out with them to kill the Irish that liud neere & about the towne; therefore she advisd this examinante to put himselfe out of the way and not to haue any hand in the businis wherevpon this Examinante tooke his bed clothes and went & stayed & lodged in his mault kilne A pretty distance from the sayd towne of Bangar
And this Examinante further sayth that within A night or two after, most of the towne of Bangar and the parish together made A Compact with those of Ballydauy about Holliwood (as this examinante was informed) to fall out in two partyes in the night ob vpon the neighbouring Irish, to kill & plunder them. And this Examinante further sayth that accordingly they went forth in the night and killd of men, woemen & Children (poore peo ple labouring people, & their familyes) about one a great number hundred, his Cause of knowledge is for that the next morning after the sayd murder was Comitted he saw those of the towne of Bangar that had beene actors in it, Come in; with bloody brakans, and other goods. Cattle; & houshold stuffe; his further Cause of knowledge is that there was A Collection made through the whole towne of Bangar for burying those were killd, whereof this examinante payd A part but cannot now remember how much
And further sayth that the names of those he this Examinante knew and & saw (so Come in) from killing the sayd Irish as aforesayd doe ensue vidzt
