The examinacion of John Smith of Downe Patrick gent taken at Carrickfergus the tenth day of June 1653 in behalf of the Comonwealth
Who being deposed vpon his oath sayth That about the nynth of ffebruary 1641 he being in the house of the Lord Cromwell viscount Lecale in downpatrick after the Rebellion began & the said house was beseiged, Neile roe o Kelly & his <A> forces first entred the towne at which tyme one Phillip Currie a servant of the deponents was murthered in the towne. And further sayth that about 2 or three dayes after the lord Maginis Viscount Iveagh, & much about the same tyme Patrick mc Cartan of Loghin Iland & Owen mc Cartan his brother came into the said towne with their forces. And further sayth that George Russell of Rathmullin Esquire with his forces were there vpon the deliuery & yeilding vp the said house & receiued half of the Armes in the house pretending to defend the Barony of Lecale against all that should oppose the Irish. And that during the continuance of the said lord Magenis, Patrick mc Cartan & Owen his brother & Russell their being in towne, Katherin Gradell, wife of Richard Gradell, was murthered & Abraham Hempton & Dorothy his wife, Ellen Erwyn an old blind woman, Ann Betts wife of William Mathew & seuerall others were likewise murthered. And further sayth That Daniel Magenis now in prison was then there in Comand <B> & hostage for performance of the Articles concluded vpon, for surrendring the said house And further sayth that vpon surrendringthe house there were then & there present Patrick Russell of Comainstowne, & James boy Russell his brother And this deponent further sayth not
