The Examinacion of Patricke mc Cartan of Loghan Island in the County of Down Esquire to Aged about 63 yeeres taken at Carickfergus 9th June 1653
Being demanded if he tooke up Armes at the begining of the Rebellyon sayth that he lived quietly at his own house till about two or three moneths after the breakeing forth of the said rebellyon and then was forced out by the Scots. being demanded if he pillaged any english mens goods at the begining of the said <A> rebellyon denyeth that he ever did any such thing, further saith the had noe Comand of any men before Downe, and that the reason of his being there at the time of the siege of Downe was to preserve the Lord Cromwells & other peoples houses & goods from spoyling & spake to those that Comanded before Downe to preserve the goods of the people and not to burne the Towne Sayth those that comanded were the chiefe men there were the Lord of Iveagh Donell mc Tirne Magneise now in prison Bryan mc hugh boy o Neill & Con o Neill & severall others, being further demanded if he summoned any castles in Lecayle denyeth that he euer sent any summons or lettres for the deliuery of any into the hands of the Irish. being further demaunded if he receiued any lettres from Collo Chichester or Sir Arthure Tyringham to incite him to come in vnto the English denyeth that he ever received any such lettres
