The examynation of Capten Bryan Mulhallen the 9th of June thirty adged thirty years taken at Carrickfergus the 9th of Jun 1653
Whoe beinge sworne & examyned saith that at the begininge of the insurrection in Irland, this examynat beinge Ensigne to Capten Henry Vpton his Company (his Containinge of the Scotch, and Irish ffor the most part, and many of them beinge olde & vnffitt ffor present seruice (all of them beinge of the said Captens tennants) did rather desire to ffollowe theire Labours as howsbandmen) then be soldier{s}prouided that they myght be secured by a partye ingadginge that they would haue noe Corraspondancye with the Comon Enemy
Capten Vpton in the presente & with the ingadgments of his infferrior officers promissed that nothinge should preiudish them, or any of them, to his power, they behaueinge themselues Honest, vpon which many of the soldiers & tennants Laid downe such Armes as they had and went to theire owne howsses
<B> And shortly after a Troope vnder the Command of one Capten Linsly togeither with others of the Country of which number this examynats Leutenant John Garuen was one as did appeare the next morning by [ ] went out in the nyght vnknowne to this examynat, in which nyght all those fformerly dischardged ffrom the Company ffor the most parte with there wiffues & Childeren, wear kild in and about Ballymartteene but by whose particullers hands any of them weare destroyed this Examinant knoweth not, And ffurther saith that the said Leutenant John Garven did reffuse to Comande the said Company as Longe any of the Irish remainde amonge them & ffurther saith not & that he harde the said Leutenant Garuen the next morning and avoweing the said acte
