The Examinacion of Knougher O Greene of the Newry in the County of Downe Adged 40 yeares, taken the 31t of May 1653
Who being duely sworne and examined saith that about the end of Januarie next after the Rebellion broke out, and on Saterday night, there came to the Towne land of Ballimartin nere Temple patterick, one John Garuan then Leutenant <A> to a foote company to one Captaine Henry Vpton now dead, with a partie of foote soldiers, belonging to the said Company, and about eleuen of the clock of that night and surprised this Examinents house and three other houses, and entering into them, and murdered all the persons that belonged to those four houses, except this Examinent and one other now dead. This Examinent haueing escaped in his shirt betooke himself to a ditch, on which a great Elder tree grew, vnder which tree hee sheltered him self and lookeing about him it being a MooneShine night hee observed that euery of the said Howses were surrounded by hoosmen, whilst the foote soldiers were murdering of the persons within those houses, And haueing murdered the said persons to the nomber of about twentie fiue, the said soldiers, and horsmen <B> deuided and tooke away thence, all their cloaths and househould stuff, with such other things they there found. And being demaunded who those murdred persons were, and by whom the were murdered, Hee saith that of the murderers hee then knew onely four besids the sayd Leutenant namely; Edward Johnson, Andrew ffarguson, John Crafford and Hugh Crafford, All with four were then Inhabitants of and nere Temple patrick And that of the murdered persons hee remembers the names following vizt Donnough McCarry, ffinnola nee Greene, Henry McCarry, Katherin ni Stocker

Meaue Nee Greene, Bryan o Boylan, Katherin Og ne Carry, Ann nee Kashin, Dority nee Knougher Rory McCarry, Giles nee Carry and Shane nee Carry and about thirteene persons more, whose names hee now remembers not. And hee saith that soone after the horse and foot had committed that Massacre, (being a worke as hee remembers of three howers time) and gon away. Hee this Examinant findeing all quiet, and the way clere for him to bee gon, went from thence that night to Glanarme without any cloathing more then his shirt by which meanes he tooke a cold that caused him to keepe his bed six dayes after, and that within six months after hee gott into Killulta, and was entred into Captaine Perkins Company, since which time hee hath continued in the said [tats] seruice And further saith not/.
