The Examination of Owen Magee aged about 24 yeeres taken at Carickfergus the 7th of May 1653
Sayth that about twenty day after Xmas at the begining of the Rebellion he this examinant was at the house of Mrs Rose Hill at Glyn in Maherymorne where uppon a sunday at dinner one donagh Magee came running into the house crying out that one John Agnew & others in his Company were <A> killing John McLaugherty a seruant of the said Mrs Hylls, betwixt in the str eet the house & one Richard McCans hard by that himselfe the said Donagh was pursued likewise by them: and Imediatly after; the said John McLaugherty came runing into the house & got the doores bard against those that pursued him; ffurther vppon which they demanded the doores to be opened or that the said John McLaugherty might be brought forth vnto them alleadinge they were vppon which But Mrs Mary Hill coming to the doore & desired to know the Reason of their hurting her Mothers seruant; which they answered to be uppon doubts of his runing to the Enemy & that they had somewhat to lay to his charge & would haue him examined & brought to Justice promiseing not to to lay vyolent hands on him or words to that purpose to the best of his memory vppon whi ch promise [ ] but if not granted some made Answer to breake open the doores & burne down the house vppon which promise the said Mrs Mary Hyll caused him to be brought forth & her Mother & her selfe went out with him vnto them into the court where they began vyolently to lay hands on him vppon which The Gentlewomen when they <B> could not helpe him went from thence over the bridge to Mr Henry Neyles & afterwards the said McLaugherty escaped again from them & came runing into a dineing roome of Mrs Hills house two men pursuing him at the heeles which this examinant knew not but saw them with drawn swords Cut him vntill he fell downe & after he was down he saw one of them thrust his sword vnto his belly which done they left the house & Mounted on horseback goeing the way towards Larne, & this examinant

in great feare left him lying for dead & went from the house to his ffathers house then liueing nere Glanoe mill; but heard that McLaugherty thus wounded remayned two dayes before he dyed, & sayth that Archibald Sloan Richard McCane & many others besides Mrs Mary Hyll can further relate of this matter; and more he sayth not /.
