The Examination of Henry Stokes taken the xvth day of Julie 1643 Before mee Sir Robert Meredith knight Chancellour of his Maiesties Court of Exchequer And one of his Maiesties Justices of the Peace for the Countie of Dublin
Who being sworne & Examined saith that hee this Examinant dwelling att Donard beeing there protected by Sir Arthur Loftus knight, went vnto the Market of Hacketstowne in the Countie of Catherlagh, vpon Wensday last was seavenight And likewise saith that there beeing att the said Market about the number of two or three hundred people there One George Misset of Bronnockstowne or Harristowne in the Countie of Kildare gaue the said people notice of the comeing of the Kings Army The said Misset comeing as hee said from the place where the said Army lay the night before vpon which notice soe giuen the said Market brake vpp & the people dispersed & droue awaie theire Catle Soe as the said Army was greatlie disappointed both of theire prey & of doing Service on the Rebells that day And this Examinant further saith that about three weekes since there came into the Countie of Wickloe where hee this Examinant dwelt a warrant from the Councell att Kilkenny for the rayseing of Pole mony throughout the whole Countie in manner of following vizt Every

Lord twenty shillings Every knight ten shillings Every Widdow that had dower ffiue shillinges Euery gent 5 s. Euery ffarmer 1 s. Euery Servant & others abou{e} the age of ffoureteene yeares six pence which said mony was in collecting throughout the said Countie & Officers agreed vpon & appointed for that vse which said Officers were to giue in theire accomptes att a Monthes end The said Officers appointed for receiueing the said mony were Peter Wickham of Talbotstowne, John Doyle heeretofore agent for Sir William Parsons Bran Birne of Courtfoile in the County of Wicklow But the fourth hee this Examinant remembers not
