The Examinacion of Captain Derenzy Massam aged 25: yeares or thereabouts duly sworne & examined the 26: daye of Aprill 1653:
Sayeth. That about the beginninge of May in the first yeare of the Rebellion William Massam Esquire ffather to this deponent and Robert Pynnion liued att Knockiccar in the County of Roscommon And vppon some occasion they togeather with this deponent goeing towards comeing from A place Called Boill, they weare mett with all by about the Number of sixteene Irishe ffoote souldiers who Immediately fell vppon them, And One of them with A skene Cutt of the heade of the said Robert Pinion and kicked it about the Bogg in the Nature of A ffootball, They alsoe with theire swords and Pickes gaue the said William Massam divers <A> Mortall Wounds, And afterwards carried him prisoner to a Cabin in Knockiccar Where (as hee Credibly heard,) hee lay languishinge for the space of Two dayes And then dyed,
Beinge examined whether hee knew any of the Actors in those Murthers, hee saith, that hee knew One Robert Hussy whoe to the best of this deponents remembrance thrust his said ffather into the brest with an holbeard:
Hee alsoe sayeth, That hee saw one fferninando mc Dermott Roe in the Cabin with his ffather after hee had bene soe wounded as aforesaid And that att that time the said fferninando had his ffathers sword and Pistoll, And further that this deponent beinge in the said Cabin with his ffather, his ffather <B> Commaunded him by all meanes to make an Escape if possible, for that the said fferninando mc Dermott threatened him that hee would putt this Deponent vppon A Sow, which was to bee vsed for the takeinge of the house of Knockiccar, And alsoe that hee heard the said fferdinando att that time say that hee would haue his said ffather exchainged for the said ffardinandoes brother who was then A Prisoner att Boil And further sayeth not.
