<A> The Examinacion of Robert Nugent of Churles Towne in the County of Roscomon yeoman Prisoner in the Marshalsyes of this Towne of Athlone concerneing the Murther of Hugh Slidd of Carricke in the County of Letrim taken before vs whose names are herevnto subscribed the 29th day of Aprill 1653
The said Examinante being duely examined saith that the first harvest after the Rebellion begann this Examinante then liueing at a place called Granshaw and being reapeing his Corne a Party of the Garrison of Carricke tooke some Garrans from this Examinate, and that the said one Mr Wright a Minister & Hugh S lidd both then liueing in the Garison of Carricke came forth about two dayes after to gather some corne and particulerly, came to this Examinantes Corne where he this Examinante accompanied with one Cahell ô Hely and some others of this Examinates servants who were reapeing of Corne and t ake tooke the said Hugh Slidd prisoner and gaue him quarter, on hopes to gett his horses which were formerly taken by the said Garrison for the ransome of the said Hugh, And that the said Hugh continued in this Examinantes custody from the morneing in which he tooke him vntill the afternoone of the day follow e ing he
He further saith that one Conner ô Burne then a Leuitenant to ô Burne & Donnell Conrey Sergeant, with about 20 souldiers whereof the names of some of them were Donnagh Conrey, John McLaughlin ô Burne, William Reagh Burnes, and William Berrin Berrin and Teige ô Burne, now a Prisoner in the Marshalsyes of this Towne came to this examinante and forcibly tooke the said Hugh Slydd out of this Examinantes Custody and carryed him a place called Cloonefadagh where as this Examinante hath Credibly heard they killed the said Hugh, This Examinante further saith That the s aid John Teige <B> ô Burne now Prisoner did confesse to this Examinante that he the said Teige was present and and one of the Company which killed the said Hugh, And that William Berrin was the Cheife Actor in the said murther as all the Souldiers and the Leuitenant afterwards told this Examinante He further saith that he is able to proue by wittnesses that he this what he hath here related is true. And further saith that John ô Burne now prisoner in the Marshalsyes was not in the company of the Souldiers that tooke the said Slidd from this Examinante neither was acting in or consenting to the Murther of the said Slidd as this Examinante ouer heard, but this examinante beleiueth the said John ô Burne was apprehended vpon a mistake in steede of the said John mcLaughlin ô Burne who was one of the Actors in the said Murther And further this examinante saith he might haue bene instrumentall for the apprehending of many of the Actors in the said Murther had he knowne when he was comitted [ ] wherefore he was soe apprehended And further saith not.
