<bis intratw> The Examinacion of Leiutenant Leech of Carlingford taken before vs the 18th January 1652 Concerning John Babe
Whoe being duly sworne vppon the holy E u angelist and examined deposeth as followeth.
he deposeth he e knoweth John Babe of Carlingford now prisoner and hath knowne him these 15 yeares past,
And further deposeth that he hath heard that by seuerall people that the said John Babe before the Cessacion w ith mad by the Lo: of ormond with the Irish, layd a plott to betray the Castle of Carlingford to the Irish, The said Castle being then held by L e i utenant Collonell Capten Edward Treuor for the King and parliament, And whoe { } heard that hee further sayth That he heard that there were some of the Irish fforces in the mountaines brought by the said Babes meanes as the Examinant hath bene enformed; that were to haue surprised the Castle of Carlingford And the Examinant being asked the question whether hee knewe or did hear that the said Babe did kill or murther any of the English he denyeth that he euer Know or heard of any such thing But on the Contrery deposeth and sayth that the said Babe did saue and preserue the liues of { } him this Examinant

2983ben his wife and Children with his ffather and mother and the liues likewise of the Ministers wife of Carlingford and one William Browne and his wife, as h e e was enformed being all English The reason of his knowledge [ ] was is that he this Examinant was present when th all the rest were stript except the Ministers wife and Browne and his wife when the said English and himselfe were stript by the Irish, and had bene all murthered had not the said Babe with his sword and pistoll rescued them and Carryed them into his own house And being further questioned whether a man and a woman was afterwar d s one Edward comonly Called Edward Coachman and a woman Called Alice Holland wh were shortly therafter putt to death at Carlingford by the order or direccions of the said John Babe Hee deposeth that hee neuer heard of any such thing, vntill about a fortnight since it was tould him by Captain Low And further hee deposeth not
