The Examination of Sir William Brumlowe Knight taken before vs at Carrickfergus the 24th of May 1653
Who being duely sworne and Examined saith that in the latter end of October 1641 that three or four dayes or thereabouts before the fireing of the Towne of Lurgan in the County of Ardmagh, which was vpon the first day of Nouember in the yeare aforesaid, Neece mc Conwell came to this Examinets house with a threatening messadge, as hee then said, by the direction of Art Og Maginis, Edmund boy Maginis, and diuers other Ireish, that was then gathered together within a mile of Lurgan, being all or the most part of them armed ready prepared, & resolued to come to the towne of Lurgan, to destroy the said towne & the inhabitants thereof, if they would not depart and get them gon from thence in all hast, And alsoe further said vnto this Examinett, that Art og Maginis, and Edmund boy Maginis, with the rest that were in their company had sent him the said Neece mc Conwell, to let this Deponet knowe, that they did admire that hee durst presume or conceaue himself, to bee able or of force to withstand them, or hould his house against their power. Haueing taken the Neury Ardmagh, with other townes, and lately destroyed and burnt Drummore, from whence they made the English and Scoch that came against them, to flee and run away. And further threatened this Examinet and the rest of them that was present in the house with him that if hee and they would not suddenly and presently depart and get them all away with speede, and leaue the house vnto the said Art og Maginis, Edmund boy Maginis, and the rest of their rebellious confetterets, they would fall vpon them, and destroy them with fire and sword, which accordingly they with diuers others in their Company, being a great multitude, Joyned together, in a viotous and rebellious way, came on the first day of Nouember 1641 towards the euening of the said day, to the towne of Lurgan, and then did fire the said towne, and killed se u erall di u ers the people as namely, John Dauis, Lennord Riggs Thomas Ward with seuerall others at which time of firing the said towne, killing and murdering, of the foornamed John Dauis, and the rest, this Examinent doth verily and creddibly beleeue, Neece mc Conwell, Patterick duff mc Conwell, and Owin roe mcKene, to bee present acters, in the said fireing of the towne and murdering of the people aforesaid. And the cause of this deponetts beleefe, that the same is truth, this deponet hath beene seuerall times informed and tould the same, dureing the time of his remaining prissoner in Ardmagh: And further saith not.
