The Examinacion of William MacGillwrath now of Branell taken by me the 2d of May 1653

Who saith that the first ffriday after the next Candlemas after the rebellio{n} hee then liuing att Ballemaglagh in the Countie of Downe, There came vnto his house one Phelim Mac Gillmore of Munar{ } distant a myle and a halfe from BalleMaglagh aforesaid in { } haueing in his Company fiue men disguised; And it being { } then late in the twilight they lighted a Candle and { } come vp to a roome where the Examinant and his sonn both were lying downe to sleepe and the said Phelim Ma Gill{more} hauing entered the said roome strock att the Examinant witha sk{ean} but did draw no blood of him att that tyme, And then {the} said Phelim and his assosiats tooke away all that was any { } woorth in the house and tooke away the Examinat likew{ise} the matter of a myle and then they Comaunded him to putt {off} his Coate; and hee then besought earnestly for his life butt they said vnto him hee should not haue his life at all but tooke him, and shooke him, for to get of his Coate and then gaue him a blow with a skean on the head, the which knocked him downe into a swoone and being in a swoone, they thrust him in the back with a dart and there left him for dead as they thought, but hee the Examinant hauing recouered out of the swoone found that hee was hurt in the back: yett hee made a shift to get to a house hard by; and from thence hee was carried to his owne hoouse The Examinant further saith that the said Phelim and his Company tooke away from him 16 Cowes & a bull & 2 horses with all his household goods. And further saith not
