The Examinacion of Richard Kelly of Carrickfergus S lather slator, adged 40 years taken before vs the 31th of May 1653
Who beeing dewly sworne and Examined, sayth that the nixt morning after the Excerable Murder at the Iland Magee, there came certayne persons, which had escaped from that Murder, to Car and beeinge entered the Towne, were brought by this deponents then Capten Capten Humphrey Johnson to the Mayneguard, (where this Examinat did duty as a Corporall) and deliuered into the Chardge of the then guard, Commanded by the sayd Capten Johnson there to contynewe till further orders. And sayth that aboute three hours after, his said Capten then Capten of the watch, commaunded this this Examinate with a ffile of Musketters to take them thence, and to lett them goe out at any gate of the Towne which they would: where vpon this Examinante goeing with them to the sowth water gate, sundry of Capten mac James MacCullows souldiers goeing then allonge, as helpinge to guard those persons out of the sayd gate, (many of the sayd MacCullows Company & of Capten Penirookes Company; most of those two Companyes of the Inhabitants of Ileland Magee, stood on the walls and aboute the sayd gate, when this Examinante left the sayd escaped persons without the gate; and Cryeinge out (haueing many of them theire Musketts Chardged) saying wee will kill them before they goe far from hand, whereof the said this examinant, hasting back to the guard heeded them not much, and in his Company sergant Clowny a Sergeant to the sayd Capten MacCullows Company, who then returned

to the Mayne guard with this Examinat. And sayth that within an hower after this deponett and the sayd Clownye returned to the Guard newes was brought thither, that three of the six persons left without the gate, were kild (as then reported) by some of Capten MacCullows souldiers and Capten Penirooks souldiers & by John Nelson & Jo: Bradfoott both of <B> Carrickfergus & Scotts men, And it was then also reported that the sayd Bradfootts wife named now dorathy strong of Car stript one of the said Murdered persons & tooke what mony hee had out of the skirte of his Jerkin, And sayth the said soldiers of MacCullows & Penirookes; would befor any orders came violently haue prest on the Guard, to have kild the said escaped persons And sayth that Bradfoott was since kild about six Myles water, as hee and others of the Scotts were plunderinge, And that John Nelson is lately ffled suspecting to bee questioned for the sayd ffact ./.And sayth that hee remembers not the names of those men that were murdered, saueing Bryan Owen Modera McGee ./. And further cannot depose/
