The Examination of Capten Andrew Adare taken befor mee Captaine John Dallway Maior of Carrickfergus this 12th of May 1653
Who for answere saith That about July 1649 the Lord of Montgomerie came & Lay close seige to this garrison and was afterwards surrendred vnto him./
That the day before the said surrender one John Griffin a souldier vnder this deponents commaund raised and made a Mutiny within this garrison & gathered to himselfe severall souldiers in Armes vnder pretence he wanted his paie./
That notice thereof being given to this deponent, as being his Captaine, this Deponent went, & through many good words & speeches, prevailed at present with the said Griffin & the rest of his confiderated Mutineers, that he procured a seeming quallificacion, & soe left him & them for that present./
That soone after this deponent was returned backe to his quarters, I suddaine intelligence was brought to this deponent that the said Griffin had deserted his post, and betaken himselfe to an other place, and in another place a muitinous manner had procured vnto himselfe five or six files of Armed men some with firelocks, the rest with Musketts and lighted Matches, and more soudliers gathering together vnto the said Griffin from all quarters of the said garrison./
That this deponent acquainting the Gouernor therewith and that the said Griffin and the rest of his said consorte were determined to possess themselues of the keys of the gates by force of Armes this deponent as all others the respective officers within the said Garrison were forthwith respectively comaunded by the said Governor to theire respectiue posts, and also sent for and so secured the said keys
That in pursuance of the said comaund this deponent comeing found the said Griffin in a mutinous manner to haue deserted this deponents said post, and retyred to make good an other quarter place with the companie aforesaid, And this deponent soe comeing, vsed all indeavours by perswacions to procure the said Griffin backe to this deponents said post, but instead of rendring his submission to or any obedyence to this deponent comaunds, presented his ffirelocke against this deponents breast bidding this

this deponent stand backe and stand of, wherevppon this deponent Laid fast hould of his bandaleirs with intent to secure this deponents life, which breakeing this deponents by a stumble backwards fell almost to the ground, and being recovered this deponent perceiueing the said Griffin to haue presented his said peece to this deponents breast and decerning nothing less then death by the said Griffins mutinous expressions, he this deponent aswell to preserue his owne life as all others within the said garrison & the loss thereof, gaue unto the said Griffin some small inconsiderable cutt, with intent onely to force him to obedyence, but he noething regarding the same nor to render any manner of obedience but forcibly <C> maineteined his said Mutinous act intending thereby noething less then to surprize the said garrison wherevppon an other suddaine thrust given the said Griffin he forthwith fell downe & dyed And this deponent further answereing saith that the same being onely acted to quallifie the said Mutinous act [ ] & in obedyence to his said comaund within duty he oweed to God & man he humbly conceiueth himselfe noe wayes guilty of Murther
