The Examinacion of Thomas Boyd of Balleyrudder now prissoner in Carrickfergus taken before vs this 16 Aprill 1653
Who saith that in the begininge of the Rebellion in Ireland hee was Tennant to Mr James Shawe of Balleygelley: and <A> was by him the said Mr Shawe about a fortnight after Cristmas in the first yeare of the warr, put into the Castle of Balleygelly amongst other of the Inhabitants of the Countrey that were Tennants to Mr Shawe aforesaid for the Defence thereof vnder the Comand of James Crummey whom the said Mr Shawe Left in charge, with his house or Castle as aforesaid when hee went for Scotland there beinge a Guarrison of the Irish vnder the Comand of Allester McColl att that tyme in Glenarme by whom much spoyle was done in those quarters & many houses burned: And this Examinante saith that hee & those with him that Lay in the house or Castle of Balleygalley had horses which they allwaies rid vpon when they went out and beinge then Demanded whether hee was euer Comanded by the said Mr Crummey or any other to march into the Countrey to doe Seruice vpon the Irish: saith that hee was not, savinge that aboute Candlemas or a month after hee with two or three more were Comanded forth: & Joyned with a party that Came from Larne vnder the Comand of Maior Greg & Maior Taylour, to fetch in victualls out of the Countrey: & that att that tyme two of the said party were slaine by the Enemy: And beinge demanded what Armes hee this Examinate had that day: saith that hee had no other Armes besides a sword and that hee sawe <B> many of the Irish that Day: and marching over the scawd Hill he sawe an Irish woman cominge down the hill and a party of the Irish vnder the Hill: and this examinate saith that att that tyme there was sixe or seaven horsemen with him, and the wooman aforesaid makinge a Cry hee this Examinate rid to her: & drew his sword and Cutt the said woman, with a backe blow blow

vpon the head or thereabouts as hee supposeth & soe away hee rode, and beinge demanded whether hee did not take away her Brackines saith that hee did not neither did hee see any other meddle with her and further saith not./
