The examinacion of John McClune taken at Carr 27 May 1653
Who being examined saith that the night when as the bloudy massacre was comitted vpon the Irish in Isle Magee he <A> then being a Corperall in Capten McCulloghes Company he with the rest of the company were ordered by their said Capten to remoue keep w remaine all night in the Shire hall of this towne although they had ben vpon the Guard the night before & was relieued by one Capten Johnson by reason they did feare an allarum should be giuen that night by some of the Rebells & there they remained all night vntill the morning at which tyme thsome of the soldiers dispersed themselves some some of their goeing to their quarters & others remaining in the said hall asleep of which this examinant was one who slept there till between ten & eleuen a clock & at his awakeing he came from thence into the town where he was informed by one whose name he knowes not that there were three Irish men which had fled out of the Island were lyeing slaine in the Irish quarters & this examinant saith that he mett with one Phill: Magee who was makeing hast towards him feareing some Scotch men which were comeing after him lest they should kill him as they Scotch about this towne did with such oth er Irish they mett that day & the said Phill: desired this examinant to saue his life vpon which he took him with him to one Phill: Edmunstons where he gaue him some Beere & desired the said Edmunston to put him into some priuate place vntill he could gett out of the towne safely And further saith not
