Reported Speech?
Reported speech could be annotated in the 1641 TEI corpus, perhaps by searching for linguistic cues such as the phrase "saith (that)" or "answereth (that)".
These linguistic cues could be annotated in the transcription element of the TEI - either manually by linguistic experts, or perhaps automatically by building a custom dictionary of reported speech indicators using IBM LanguageWare. Reported speech cues (or the reported speech itself, if it can be determined) could then be displayed differently on CLRLE, by highlighting in yellow, for example.
CLRLE's built-in Content Management System was used to manually annotate the reported speech indicators (and a first guess at the reported speech) in a handful of depositions to demonstrate this point. Naviagate to the Deposition Transcription fields of the deposition links presented above right to see the results.
